Our 7 highlights of Mozambique

Highlights of Mozambique

Mozambique, what a special country! Read here about our highlights of Mozambique. Mozambique is an immense country and therefore it was impossible to visit all beautiful spots. We decided to focus on the northern part with its empty beaches, green tea plantations and challenging roads. With the lack of other tourists, it felt we had all this beauty to ourselves!

1. Snorkeling with dolphins and having it all to yourself

Definitely the highlight of our trip: we could snorkel with dolphins! And not just a single dolphin, no… we swam in between a group of 15. And not just a single time, no…. we could splash into the water several times.

We had hired a boat with a captain to enjoy a 2-day trip on the waters around Ibo Island, and this brought many more of our highlights of Mozambique. Just continue to read.

2. Enjoying postcard-perfect islands in the Quirimbas

During our boat trip we not only swam with dolphins, but also enjoyed white-sand beaches, blue waters and colorful coral. With a friendly captain and boatman, we spend 2 days on and in the waters of the Quirimbas. We camped at “Daddy’s place” on the beach of Matemo island. This is really a beautiful spot with amazing stargazing.

Any plans to visit Ibo Island? Don’t miss out on such an amazing boat trip. We arranged this via Lucy who owns the Boabibo accommodation.

3. Hiking through the mangroves from Ibo to Quirimba Island

Another amazing activity on Ibo Island is to hike through the mangroves to Quirimba Island. If you are lucky with the tide, you can walk all the way from Ibo to Quirimba island. If you are unlucky with the tide (as we were), you have to do a part with a boat. The walk itself is really beautiful and lots of fun, as well as the time you can spend on Quirimba island. This is yet another island with a beautiful beach and very friendly locals!

4. Diving in the warm waters around Pemba

One of our other highlights of Mozambique is our dive in Pemba. There is only 1 diving school in Pemba, so expect to pay a lot for this experience. On the other hand, we got a private opportunity to enjoy the beautiful coral.

5. Visiting historical places on Mozambique island

Mozambique has been a Portuguese colony and you can find some traces of this across the country. Mozambique island was the capital during part of the Portuguese ruling and therefore has many old colonial buildings. Because most buildings are ruined (except for the renovated expensive hotels), the island has a special atmosphere especially at night.

6. Hiking through the green tea plantations of Gurue

Mozambique has more to offer than history and beaches. We drove inland towards Malawi and there you find a nice town called Gurue. It is surrounded by tea plantations, which offer some opportunity for hiking. Expect curious locals along the way. Especially the children are very eager to pose for your camera.

7. Being on the road is definitely one of the highlights of Mozambique

Driving around the country was also one of our highlights of Mozambique. This gave us the opportunity to fully experience the country. The roads could be challenging, but this was part of the fun. Although some patience is needed when it takes 7 hours to drive 150 kilometers.

After we returned our car we also traveled a bit with public transport. This was the real African experience as we were sitting on the back of an open truck. We passed many small villages where little children were pointing at us and shouting “muzungu” (the term for “white person”). Our fellow passengers would laugh at us, because we were putting on so much sunscreen. It was a very special way of transport, giving us a better insight into the way people live. Although after 6 hours sitting on a bag of potatoes in the heating sun together with 25 others, we were happy to stretch our legs again. It makes you appreciate what you have even more!

So, plenty of reasons to take a trip to Northern Mozambique. But we have to be honest, next to the highlights of Mozambique, the country also brings its challenges. We have faced corruption, seen a lot of poverty and had to conquer very poor roads. The above highlights of Mozambique more than compensate however!
